R-454B is here: what changes at the counter

Every new GE split system on our shelf is charged with R-454B. It is an A2L — mildly flammable — and that changes a few practical things about how equipment moves between our counter and your job.

What is different

  • Cylinders look different. R-454B ships in left-hand-thread cylinders with a red band. Your R-410A hoses and gauges will not thread on, and that is deliberate.
  • Leak detection is built in. The GE air handlers and coils carry a factory sensor that shuts the system down and runs the blower if it senses refrigerant. Do not disable it to clear a fault code — the code is telling you something.
  • Storage and transport. Keep cylinders upright and secured, out of the cab, and away from ignition sources. Nothing exotic, but the fines are real.

What is not different

Line sizing, brazing practice and evacuation targets are the same as you are used to. R-454B is close enough to R-410A in performance that the install itself will feel familiar. The differences are all in handling.

Ask at the counter if you want the GE service literature for a specific model — we can print the install instructions with your order.
